As a carpenter and general contractor in an intensely male-dominated field, Carly Boynton is often asked how she got into the trades. Like many builders’, her story begins in her family's garage. “I built all kinds of things with rickety old tools as a kid, got a labor job on a construction site when I was eighteen, and started framing houses when I was nineteen". She received an undergraduate degree in Sustainable Design from Prescott College, and went on to become the fore(wo)man for a high-end remodel company in the Bay Area, Selbert Construction.

Several years and many houses later, Carly received a Master’s of Architecture degree from the San Francisco Institute of Architecture where she acquired the skills necessary to design and implement projects reflecting her own vision, which she describes as “bare bones” design.

Carly loves peeling back the layers of the ages to restore buildings to their original state and show off their natural forms. Committed to sustainability, she often works with salvaged materials to expose the beauty of age while maintaining her clean-line aesthetic and sophisticated craftsmanship.

Through Grain Design Build, Carly is excited to work with homeowners on everything from high-end remodels and additions to smaller, more affordable projects that play with existing structures to create a more harmonious environment within a building’s original parameters.

Almost two decades after her first professional building job, Carly is still doing what she loves—creating beautiful, sustainable, and comfortable spaces for people to live in. She and her crew looks forward to helping you turn your ideas into your living space.
